Located in the vibrant Warangal district, Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) stands as one of Telangana's premier medical institutions. Affiliated with the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences and recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), KMC is dedicated to providing top-tier medical education and training.

History
Founded in 1959 by the Warangal Regional Medical Education Society, Kakatiya Medical College was established with the active support of the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, the Director of Medical Services of A.P., and the Warangal District Collector, Mohsin Bin Shabbir. Shabbir's contribution is commemorated at the main entrance of the college with the quote, "The Earth sometimes bears gems and here is one."

The college was officially inaugurated on July 23, 1959, by P. Karmarkar, the Minister of Health, Government of India. Initially housed in a building donated by the Pingale family at Waddepally, KMC moved to its permanent site in November 1961, where a makeshift building was constructed to accommodate the growing needs of the institution.

Campus Overview
Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) boasts an expansive campus spanning 152.17 acres (0.6158 km²) in Warangal, making it the largest medical college in Telangana and one of the largest in India. The permanent college building, constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 47 lakhs, was inaugurated by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1966.
Campus Overview

The permanent college building, constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 47 lakhs, was inaugurated by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1966.

Facilities and Infrastructure
Initially, temporary sheds were constructed in 1961 at a cost of Rs. 10.70 lakhs, which were later remodeled into the boys' hostel. A permanent girls' hostel was built and inaugurated by Sri J. Chokka Rao, Chairman of the A.P. Regional Committee, in 1970. The boys' hostel was inaugurated by Sri H.C. Sarin, I.C.S., then advisor to the Governor of Andhra Pradesh, on July 20, 1973.

The campus also features an impressive auditorium with an open-air stage, constructed at a cost of Rs. 4 lakhs, which can accommodate 500 students and is equipped with cinematographic equipment. The AP Housing Board constructed staff quarters and a guest house on the college campus. Additionally, the campus includes buildings housing a cloakroom, canteen, Andhra Bank, Post Office, and Engineering Department.

Additional Facilities
The Regional Medical Education Society (R.M.E.S.) has constructed several key facilities within the premises of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Warangal, including the Outpatient (O.P.) Block, Tuberculosis (T.B.) Block, Lecture Hall, Clinical Lab, and Mortuary.

Administrative Changes
In February 1977, the A.P. Government took over the college from R.M.E.S. The same year, the college's affiliation was transferred from Osmania University to Kakatiya University. Since March 1, 1997, the college has been affiliated with N.T.R. University of Health Sciences, and following the formation of Telangana, it is now affiliated with Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences, Warangal.

Postgraduate Programs
Postgraduate courses were introduced in 1972, and KMC now offers postgraduate programs across all departments. The college owes its esteemed status to the visionary leadership of the late Prof. T. Lakshminarayana, who served as the principal from 1960 to 1965. All postgraduate courses are recognized by the Medical Council of India (M.C.I.).

Courses at Kakatiya Medical College
Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) is recognized as one of the premier medical institutions in Telangana. Each year, the college admits 250 students based on merit through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), a highly competitive exam taken by nearly 20 lakh aspirants across India. Telangana offers approximately 3,900 MBBS seats, with 3,100 in 23 private colleges and 4,090 in 34 government medical colleges. To date, KMC has awarded MBBS degrees to 5,600 candidates.
Undergraduate Courses
MBBS – Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (250 students per year): To qualify for the undergraduate MBBS program, students must have completed 10+2 or equivalent education with Botany, Zoology, Physics, and Chemistry as optional subjects. Admission is based on the rank obtained in the NEET exam, and the University of Health Sciences allocates seats across medical, dental, ayurvedic, and homeopathy colleges in Telangana.
Postgraduate Courses
Since 2008, KMC has been admitting 70 postgraduate students annually. The college offers a range of postgraduate programs across various medical disciplines, providing advanced education and training to future healthcare professionals.

Clinical Courses
Doctor of Medicine (MD): A comprehensive three-year program offering specializations in Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, Radiology, Anaesthesiology, Dermatology, Pulmonology (Chest Medicine), Psychiatry, and Social & Preventive Medicine (a blend of clinical and non-clinical studies).
Master of Surgery (MS): This three-year course provides in-depth training in General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, and Otorhinolaryngology (ENT).
Postgraduate Diploma: A two-year program available in Anaesthesiology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Paediatrics, and Radiology.
Non-Clinical Courses
MD: A three-year course in Physiology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, and Anatomy.
Admission Requirements
To qualify for all postgraduate and diploma courses, candidates must hold an MBBS degree from an MCI (Medical Council of India) recognized medical college in India or an equivalent foreign degree recognized by the MCI. Admission to PG courses is through the NEET-PG examination conducted nationwide.
Alumni Activities
KMC alumni, both in India and abroad, actively contribute to enhancing educational standards and infrastructure. The institution celebrated its golden jubilee in 2009, marking 50 years of excellence.

• Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Warangal, a 1200 bedded multispecialty tertiary care teaching hospital and caters to the needs of more than 1 million population in the districts of Warangal, Karimnagar, Khammam and other North Telangana regions.

Government Maternity Hospital, Hanamkonda. In a report published by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), India, the Government Maternity Hospital (GMH), Hanamkonda, was recognised as the only hospital in south India which had successfully handled 1000 HIV/AIDS delivery cases in the last eight years.

Kakatiya Multi-speciality Hospital (Under Construction). Kakatiya Multi-speciality Hospital is a 24-Storeyed Building, Making it as one of the Tallest Hospital in India.


University affiliation

As with all medical colleges of the state, it is under the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences located at Warangal, Telangana. The medical college and university are run with guidance from Medical Council of India.
